In the Harz and surrounding area, there are about 9,000 km of hiking trails available to hikers, although the mountain range itself is only 110 km long and between 30 km and 40 km wide, with an area of 2,226 km². The Goethe Trail is probably the best-known hiking trail in the Harz Mountains, with a distance of 8.5 km. It leads from the Torfhaus Visitor Centre (811 m above sea level) parallel to the B4, after a short distance to the Radauer Born, the Great Torfhaus Moor over wooden planks, then through dense spruce forest to the crossing of the tracks of the Brocken Railway, which still takes visitors directly to the Brocken by steam locomotive. Arriving at the Brocken, the highest mountain in the range (1,141 m above sea level), it is best to let a quotation from Goethe take effect: "The highest thing man can attain is astonishment." This was probably also known to Heinrich Heine, the famous poet, when he wrote his travelogue "Die Harzreise" in 1824.
There are more reasons for acquiring a property Harz than hiking. However, nature and leisure play a major role: in summer, leisure pools, thermal baths and open-air pools, bike and climbing parks and summer tobogganing. In winter, amusements in ice sports facilities, tobogganing, snowboarding and skiing with lifts and cable cars. Admittedly, winter sports are not as represented in the Harz as in other large German low mountain ranges or even the Alps. But with twelve ski slopes in the district of Goslar, five in the district of Osterode and one ski slope in the district of Harz, there is plenty of choice and the cross-country ski trails with a length of 500 km are always worthwhile for a winter sports enthusiast to buy a property in the Harz.
