... building housed the mint of the St. Georgen monastery, which was formerly a Benedictine abbey. Above the pointed arched entrance is a clay-fired, colored relief depiction of St. George. It is a copy of the wooden original from 1530, which can be seen today in the town hall collection in the view of Stein am Rhein with Hohenklingen Castle, engraving by Matthäus Merian, 1642. There was a bakery here until around 1800, then a butcher's shop until well into the 20th century. A comprehensive renovation was carried out under the new owner in 1983. The construction of the adjoining building - Zum Rosenberg - can be traced back to around 1560. In addition to earlier events that significantly influenced the townscape, in 1863 a major fire in the Oberstadt area, formerly known as Obere Gasse, destroyed around a quarter of all the town houses.
