Moated Castle near Fürstenberg/Havel

A prince may reign no more in Fürstenberg, but the castle remains: of the oldest building in the city - the Wasserburg, the moated castle built between 1150 and 1200 as a German defense from the resident Slavs - only the foundation walls remain. The moated castle was later rebuilt and redecorated in the style of the Renaissance. The counts of Lindow were its original owners. The brothers Otto and Ulrich von Dewitz were raised to the nobility in 1349 and granted the rule of Fürstenberg. The castle served as their ruling seat. The castle is rectangular in shape and was originally surrounded on all sides by a water-filled moat. The bulidings were clustered around an approx. 30 x 20 m inner courtyard. - - - The big southern building (1572) became the rooms and sleep chambers of the dukes Karl and Johann and their duchesses after 1591. The older building on the east contained a hall, the bedrooms of the princes, a study chamber, a pantry, kitchen, tailoring etc as well as two more chambers and the chambers for servants, writers and other staff. In the north stood the gate house, the grain house and stables. In addition to these buildings existed two pigsties, a barn and forecastle house. - The castle has changed in the course of time, but the core (the old and new houses) has remained and still exists today. In 1819 the Grand Duke Georg bought the castle from its private owners and gave it to the city of Fürstenberg for use as a schoolhouse. - - - Until a few years ago, it was used as a school crèche and museum and now stands vacant. - - - According to legend, an underground passageway connects the castle to the monastery of Himmelpfort. Wood-covered steps were recently discovered leading down under the side wing of the castle. Could this be the entrance of the underground passage? Today this entrance is covered with a glass plate.
